A big hello from myself! I am Mrs Douglas and I am the class teacher. There is also Mrs Brookes who works in our classroom as our teaching support assistant,  Mrs Petts is our lunchtime supervisor and we have Mrs Hampshire as our special needs assistant. Year 5 has so many exciting experiences for you to get busy with including your first bikeability and chess experience! Here is a quick look at the classroom and some of the learning walls that support your learning.

In Year 5 we also read the follow texts to support our whole class reading and comprehension. These books are;

  • The Secret Lake
  • Who Let The God’s Out
  • Brightstorm
  • Carries War

To support our topics and provide cross curricular links we also read;

  • Digging A Hole To Heaven
  • Wolves In The Wall
  • Shakletons Journey
  • Kensuke’s Kingdom
  • The Lion and The Unicorn
  • Bombs and Blackberries (play script)
  • Rose Blanche

There is also a wealth of non-fiction texts available in our read and relax corner which the children can access at any time.

To celebrate our love of reading and reading for pleasure we have our class reading journal that goes home with a child once a week. This is then filled in after they have read a book and they share their review with the rest of the class. The sharing so far has been amazing and has created some fabulous dialect and conversations.

For our spellings we follow a scheme set by Spelling Shed. The trackers are sent out half termly so we can see week to week what we have to learn for our spelling test on a Friday Morning.

To help us learn our timetables and continue to improve our speed and recall, we have our own login for Timetables Rockstars

To help us become better Mathematicians we follow the White Rose Maths Hub as our main scheme of learning. We use a wealth of other resources to help us embed our learning further and enjoy lots of practical investigations in maths. Click below to see the yearly overview for maths.

Super Scientists in Year 5

As scientists we first investigate what science is all about and why it is so important to our learning and development. We discuss what we can use to help us learn and develop. These are some of the characters we have displayed in our classroom.

Autumn one we investigate Earth and Space, how planets rotate around the sun. Why we have a day and a night time and the stages of the moon.We look look at shadows and the position of the sun throughout the day.

Autumn two we investigate Materials. Looking at solubility, transparancy, conductivity and hardness of different materials. Lots of investigations and experimenting with this topic!

Spring one and two we will explore Forces and the use of gravity. We will design parachutes for a favourite old friend and look at resistance in the air and water. We will get busy looking at the effect of gears and pulleys and the effect on forces.

Summer one we continue with the focus on Living Things and their Habitats. We specifically look at plants and the specification based on their characteristics. We will study micro-organisms and group these by looking at similarities and differences.

Summer two we will continue to develop our scientific knowledge on Animals, including humans. We focus upon the circulatory sytem and describe the functions of the heart, vessels and blood.

To compliment our learning we do plenty of outdoor learning wherever possible and we are lucky to have such beautiful outdoor areas including our very own wild meadow and raised beds.

Physical Education and Swimming

In Year 4 the children also start their curriculum entitlement to KS2 Swimming as apart of their Physical Education programme of study, however due to Covid the children missed out and will be attending in Year 5 until February half term.

All children attend regardless of ability and are taught by or guided by a qualified swimming coach provided by Sun Lane Swimming Baths. We currently attend on a Wednesday afternoon.  The children also take part in a PE session on a Thursday afternoon which is conducted by an outside provider. The timetable is found on the sports and PE page of the website.

Gallery of fun to be updated throughout the term.
