Modern Foreign Languages
French is the modern foreign language that we teach formally in our school.
The curriculum that we follow is based on the guidance given in the Key Stage 2 Framework for Languages, the National Curriculum Non-Statutory Guidelines for MFL and ‘La Jolie Ronde’ scheme of work for French at Key Stage 2.
We teach the children to know and understand how to:
• ask and answer questions;
• use correct pronunciation and intonation;
• memorise words;
• interpret meaning;
• understand basic grammar;
• use dictionaries;
• work in pairs and groups to communicate in the other language;
• look at life in another culture.
We plan opportunities for language learning in the teaching of other subjects. Children in Foundation Stage and in Key Stage 1 are introduced to languages with taster sessions prior to the more formal teaching in KS2.
We also strive to ensure that our children’s transition to secondary school is as smooth as possible and maintain close links with the local high school.
In May 2010 our school was invited to be part of a Connecting Classrooms Project linking Netherton J&I School with Jitou Primary School in Chengdu, China. This involved an initial visit to China to begin an exciting International link.
The link between our schools went from strength to strength and saw a delegation of Chinese visitors come to our school in October 2011.
We have full International School Award for our Outstanding Contribution to the development of International learning.
